COAST GUARD to Construct 28 Single Family Housing Units at NASA Wallops Island site

NORFOLK, VA – The Coast Guard recently awarded a $6.6 million contract to Tesoro Corporation of Virginia Beach, Va., to construct 14 housing duplexes for Coast Guard Group Eastern Shore. The new houses will be located at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Goddard Space Flight Center site, Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, Va.

This new housing will replace 25 existing deteriorated Coast Guard housing units constructed at Wallops Island in 1936. These 28 new Coast Guard housing units will share an existing Navy housing site. One of the desired outcomes of the facility design was to make the combined sites look homogenous. The Coast Guard worked closely with NASA and the Navy incorporating lessons learned from the previous Navy housing project, making the necessary improvements in unit and site design to meet the desired end-state. The new homes will support Coast Guard families and members assigned to USCG Group Eastern Shore, USCG Station Chincoteague, USCG Aids to Navigation Team (ANT) Chincoteague, and the Electronic Support Detachment (ESD) Chincoteague. With minor changes to the Navy’s design the Coast Guard awarded the Design/Build contract to complete the design and construct these new housing units.

The Coast Guard’s Facilities Design and Construction Center Atlantic (FDCCLANT) awarded this contract on Feb. 12, 2003, to Tesoro Corporation, an 8-A construction contractor that is partnered with Burgess & Niple, a full service design firm.  Construction will start in May 2003 and is scheduled for completion by mid-November of this year.
